Acne Scars – Are They Permanent?

Acne Scars – Are They Permanent?

Clearing up your skin is a lengthy process, and anyone who has had acne knows that it requires more than a simple skincare routine. While medications, cleansers, and moisturizers can help with acne relief, only time and treatment can fade acne scars.

Types of acne scars:

Cystic acne breakouts can penetrate the skin deeply and cause scarring, resulting in acne scars.

  • Scarring occurs when your body produces too much or too little collagen during the healing process.
  • Too little collagen causes depressed scars, which give the skin a pitted appearance. Raised scars are caused by an excess of collagen.
  • While some scars are permanent, acne scars and other minor blemishes can be reduced and faded.
  • There are several kinds of acne scars, but they can be divided into three types: Atrophic, hypertrophic, and keloid skin conditions

Atrophic scars are flat or shallow and consist of rolling scars, boxcar scars, and ice-pick scars.

  • Rolling scars

These scars make your skin look rumpled and uneven. They are caused by scar tissue bands beneath the skin. These can be treated with lasers, microneedling, and skin resurfacing procedures.

  • Boxcar scars

Boxcar scars are skin craters caused by severe acne inflammation. Shallow boxcar scars can be easily treated with skin resurfacing, but deeper scars may necessitate a more intensive dermatological treatment, such as subcision and punch techniques, to remove scar tissue and encourage healthy tissue growth.

  • Ice pick scars

Ice pick scars are deep, v-shaped scars that appear to be punctured with an ice pick, thus the name. Because they extend deep into the skin, they can be difficult to treat. A combination of scar treatments can help reduce the appearance of multiple ice-pick scars.

  • Hypertrophic and keloid scars are usually more visible because they cause extra tissue to form where the acne once was.
  • Hypertrophic scars are the same size as the original sore, whereas keloid scars expand the blemish.
  • Acne can also cause hyperpigmentation or darkened or red patches of skin.
  • Weight loss or gain, sun exposure, and coexisting skin conditions such as rosacea can all exacerbate and make acne scars more visible.
  • Fortunately, there are numerous approaches we can take to address acne scarring and prevent it from becoming a permanent part of your appearance.

What can you do to get rid of acne scars?

  • You must first control your acne before seeking treatment for acne scars.
  • Some treatments can aggravate acne, and you should avoid spending money on scar removal until you’ve taken steps to prevent new ones.

At Partha Dental, Skin, and Hair Clinic, we provide a variety of acne scar treatment options, including:

  • Skin rejuvenation and resurfacing with fractional CO2 laser
  • Peels are used to treat hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone.
  • PRP [platelet rich plasma]
  • Microneedling
  • These treatments work by stimulating collagen and elastin production, which fills in depressions caused by acne scars and reduces hyperpigmentation.
  • The fractional CO2 laser is particularly effective at treating all types of acne scarring, such as ice pick, boxcar, and even keloid scars.
  • It is important to remember that deeper wounds and scars take longer to heal. While skin treatments can help you fade surface scars and alleviate deeper ones, there is always the possibility that faint scarring will remain permanent.

Have you finally gotten your acne under control? You can now start treating what it left behind. To learn more about your options, schedule a consultation.
