How Same-Day Dental Crowns Work: Are They Safe and Reliable?

Clinically Reviewed by Partha Dental Team
Last Modified: 1st August 2025

If you’ve ever needed a dental crown, you’ll understand that the procedure can take several visits and weeks of waiting.  Consider going to the dentist and leaving the same day with a new crown.  That is the advantage of same-day crowns, and it is transforming the way people receive restorative dentistry.

Here we will describe how same day dental crowns work, what to expect in the process, their accuracy, and if they are the best choice for you.

1. What is a Same Day Crown?

A same day crown is a dental crown that is designed, made, and placed in the same appointment with a dentist. You won’t be able to get a same day crown unless you have a dentist with in-office CAD/CAM (only types of same-day crowns you can get). While traditional crowns can take a couple of visits, will require impressions, lab work, and temporary crowns, a same-day crown is fully designed and cemented in the office, with the most advanced CAD/CAM technology available.

At  Partha Dental, our dentists are certified and have the amenity of using the latest and competent equipment to make your crown not only effective but also accurate and esthetically close to your natural teeth.

2. How Same day dental crowns Work

This is how the same day crown process works step by step:

1. Digital Scanning Instead of Impressions

Once they have reviewed the tooth to be worked on, your dentist will use a 3D intraoral scanner to digitally scan the area, and there will be no gross impression trays involved!

2. Real-Time Designing of Your Crown

The digital scan will be loaded into CAD software and your dentist will design a custom-fit crown to your bite and smile (just like a normal crown). This only takes a few minutes, and can be tweaked on-screen right in front of you!

3. Milling the Crown On-Site

After your crown is created, the information is sent to an in-house milling machine, where your crown will be milled from one piece of ceramic. Milling can take about 15–20 minutes.

4. Crown Placement and Adjustment

The crown is placed on your tooth after polishing the crown up and, if required, staining the crown. Your dentist will test its fit prior to accepting the restoration onto the tooth permanently.

3. Do same-day crowns last long?

The answer is an absolute yes!

The overwhelming majority of same-day crowns are made of high-strength ceramics or lithium disilicate. These materials are durable and highly aesthetic. In addition, these materials are identical to those that traditional dental crowns are made from in dental laboratories.

Precision Fit

Since same day crowns are constructed by means of computer-based design helped by digital imaging technology, they are likely to create a more ideal, precise fit, potentially eliminating any risk of gaps in tooth and crown, exposure to decay, or any biting complication.

Longevity

Dental crowns, either same day or lab-made crown, will last 10-15 years or more provided the patient keeps good oral health, brushes twice a day, flosses once daily, and visits the dentist regularly.

4. Same day crowns Cost: What to Expect

Patients seeking same day crown treatment tend to have preconceived notions about the same day crowns cost, thinking that they have to pay more for the convenience of ease, compared to standard crowns. The cost difference is not as dramatic as most patients expect.

What Influences Same Day crowns Cost?

•The overall tooth position (front tooth vs. molar)

•Materials

•Any additional procedure (e.g., root canal, build up)

•General insurance coverage

At Partha Dental, we believe in honest and transparent pricing. Before your treatment begins, our team will provide you with a detailed estimate of your treatment cost as well as payment plans that will allow you to pay for your treatment.

5. Same Day Crown Advantages

Accuracy

Digital scanning does away with the possibility of human error inherent in traditional impressions.

Comfort

No fuss about a temporary crown that can fall off or bother your mouth.

Convenience

A great choice for busy professionals, parents, or anyone wanting the convenience of ultimate dental care.

6. Who Is Eligible for Same day crowns?

There are likely to be many potential patients, but same day crowns are ideal for:

• Those requiring moderate to full coverage

• Those with no severe gum or bite complications

• Patients who want cosmetic rehabilitation in less time

In certain situations, for extremely complex cases or restoration needs requiring custom coloration unavailable in a regular procedure, lab-fabricated crowns may be recommended.

What About Same Day Crown Replacement?

Yes, in the majority of cases, replacement of a crown is possible and even often less time consuming than the original procedure. If you have an old or broken crown we can remove, then we can create and install a new one all in the same visit, typically in about an hour.
